THEORIES OF ASIAN ARCHITECTURE

The subject explores the history of South, Southeast and East Asian architecture as a whole within a systematic treatment of architectural design and construction, building science and technology, garden design and city planning through three key themes: sustainability, tradition and modernity & globalization. These themes will guide the organization of weekly lectures and projects, which will proceed from the establishment of a basic theoretical apparatus to the examination of specific cases. Students will develop an understanding of Asian architecture and urbanism and interpret Asian architectural language through research posters and oral presentations.

Project 1(INDIVIDUAL):

Contextual Study Sketch Journal

of a Traditional Street

 CHINATOWN KL : JALAN SULTAN

In this assessment, students are tasked to select a traditional street from the given lists and research the understanding of place contexts and the construction of the place identity and socio-cultural meanings of the chosen street.

We are required to conduct physical site visits and identify the physical and non-physical contexts. The observations are then required to present in the form of a manual sketch journal and a written summary.

Through this project, we can understand the specific contexts that constitute the unique place identity and analyze the relationship between architecture and its social, cultural, and intellectual context.

SELF-reflection

Upon completing this project 1, I can better the importance of preserving the identity of a place, especially my selected site, Jalan Sultan which has lots of untold stories in its development. Research and site visits provide me with a chance to have a deeper understanding of the historical developments of traditional streets in Malaysia such as the building typology, architectural styles and facades and traditional businesses. Besides, through this project, I know that we can not only observe and analyze history and culture through words but also can present them in terms of visuals and sketches.

Project 2 (GROUP):

Poster and Seminar-Contemporary Issues in Asian Architecture

In this research-based project, students are required to choose an issue observed from the site visit based on project 1 in groups of 6-8 people and identify a framework from the observations and research.

We are tasked to produce a topic proposal, research poster and a seminar video presentation through a research-based discussion with our groupmates to understand the tradition, modernity and place identity in the selected contexts.

The expected outcome of the project is to be able to describe the historical development of vernacular architecture in response to its native context and explain the development of contemporary Asian architecture with the themes of tradition, modernity and globalization.

SELF-reflection

In this group project of 8, we decided to choose Jalan Tun HS Lee as most of the group members have done this street for project 1. Through site visits and in-depth research, this project allows us to have a deeper understanding of our local context and the issues the street is facing. Although there is still a lot to improve on in this project, especially in the content, it is a good experience for us to learn about the heritage building and the way to maintain its place identity.

Besides, I learned how important communication among team members is to effectively achieve our expected progress and results since apart from this project, everyone has their own tasks to complete.
